Chemistry 152L - Laboratory Policies (Syllabus, page 2) |
||||||||
| Attendance:
I expect you to be active
learners, who participate fully during each experiment and make
an effort to enjoy this sometimes rather tedious subject. If you miss
a lab, you remain responsible for any announcements, information,
and schedule modifications presented that day.
Late arrivals to lab may diminish your safety and the safety of other students in the room.
Late arrivals may directly affect your quiz grade, as our lab quizzes will often begin promptly at 6:30 pm. Lab quizzes have fixed ending times, regardless of your arrival time. There are no make-ups for pre-lab quizzes, regardless of whether or not your absence is excuseed. Lab make-ups might be possible during another lab period, (1) if your absence is excused, (2) with my prior approval, (3) with the prior approval of the other lab instructor, and (4) only if the other class is doing the same lab experiment. Plan ahead as much as you can! Completing your labs: You may leave early if your lab work is complete and your work area is clean.
Adding the Course. Students wishing to add the course will be accepted in the following order, as long as there is space available. (1) Previous arrangement, (2) Add list, (3) Random crasher list. The lab is capped at a maximum of 24 students for safety reasons by fire department instructions. |
Excused Absence. Absences are "excused" by prior permission of your instructor only. If you don't notify me of your absence according to the following guidelines, your absence will be unexcused. Professional or personal reasons, including non-emergency illness: You must notify me before the start time of the lab you will miss. See below for a list of acceptable ways to notify me. Emergency: Contact me (or arrange for a friend or family member to contact me) as soon as possible, but no later one day after the lab you miss. Acceptable Notice, in order of preference:
Drops by Professor. The College requires me to drop any registered student who does not attend or have an excused absence for the first day of school. College policy also allows me to drop any student with six total hours of unexcused absences (6% of class time), and requires me to drop any student with 12 total hours of unexcused absences (12% of class time). Drops by Student. Please note that you will receive a grade if you remain on the course roster after the withdrawal deadline (April 11), even if you have decided to drop the course. A grade of W may be assigned to students who withdraw after February 8 and until April 11. After April 11, a grade of A, B, C, D, or F must be assigned. If you do decide to drop the course, you must do so by contacting the Admissions Office. Safety Note: Students who drop CHEM 152 must also drop CHEM 152L and check out of lab immediately and will be responsible for any missing equipment. Failure to check out by the end of the semester will result in a lab fine being added to your college account (see Check-In sheet for details). |
