Chemistry 100/100L Syllabus, page 2 - Course Policies

mustBe here now. I expect you to be active learners, who pay attention during class and make an effort to enjoy this sometimes rather tedious subject. If you miss a lecture, you remain responsible for all material, notes, announcements, new assignments, and schedule modifications presented that day.

Be courteous. If you do not want to listen and take notes during class, please be courteous to those who do. You may nosh during lecture, but not lab, if you are polite and do not disturb others.

Adding the Course. Students wishing to add the course will be accepted in the following order, as long as there is space available. (1) Previous arrangement, (2) Add list, (3) Random crasher list. The lab is capped at a maximum of 24 students for safety reasons per fire department instructions.

Office Hours. I don't have an office at Miramar. Periodically, I will hold office hours at the nearby Panera Restaurant or another location in Mira Mesa. These meetings are not required, and are on my own time, and are designed to provide you with an opportunity to ask questions or just to study. Other convenient opportunities to ask questions include labs that you finish early, email (anytime), and instant messenger (anytime that I'm online).

Drops by Student. Please note that you will receive a grade if you remain on the course roster after 6/23 (Lab) or 6/24 (Lecture), even if you have decided to drop the course. If you do decide to drop the course, you must contact the Admissions Office and actually drop it. A grade of W may be assigned to students who withdraw after the this date and until 7/18/2006. After 7/18/2006, a grade of A, B, C, D, or F must be assigned.

atomicSafety Note: Students who drop CHEM 100 must also drop CHEM 100L and check out of lab immediately and will be responsible for any missing equipment. Failure to check out by the end of the semester will result in a lab fine being added to your college account (see Check-In sheet, available in the lab, for details).

Excused Absence (Criteria & Privileges). Absences are "excused" by prior permission of your instructor only. No make-up opportunities exist for lab experiments, in-class activities, quizzes, and exams that you miss due to any absence or tardiness (excused or unexcused). Excused absences are not counted as "missed" classes under the "Drops by Professor" section elsewhere on this page. When you miss a lab problem set or homework assignment due to an excused absence, you may submit the item upon your return with a 20% deduction for each class period late. Even if you are absent, you may submit an assignment on-time via scan/email or fax. If you don't notify me of your absence according to the following guidelines, however, your absence will be unexcused.

  • Professional or personal reasons, including non-emergency illness: You must notify me before 6:00 pm on the day of the class you will miss. See below for a list of acceptable ways to notify me.
  • Emergency: Contact me (or arrange for a friend or family member to contact me) as soon as possible, but no later than 6:00 pm on the day following the class you miss.
  • Acceptable Contact/Notification, in order of preference:
    1. E-mail to dlingner [at] sdccd.net
      (E-mail is strongly preferred.)
    2. Written note given directly to me.
    3. Written note in my faculty mailbox (Room A-104).
    4. Contact by phone is not recommended; I don't use my SDCCD-assigned voice mail box.

Absences, tardiness, and early exits will be noted and recorded, and may affect your grade in borderline situations. Miramar College policy allows me to treat late arrivals and early departures as unexcused absences.

Drops by Professor. Miramar College policy requires me to drop any registered student who does not attend, is late, and does not have a prearranged excused absence for the first day of school. The College allows me to drop any student who miss 6% of the total class time in the semester (unexcused), and requires me to drop any student with unexcused absences totalling more than 12% of our class time. Don't expect me to drop you, just because you have stopped attending the class.

You are responsible for everything that I cover during each class and lab period, without exception, whether or not you attend. This includes new assignments, due dates, announcements, course materials not covered in our book, and more.
