From: David Lingner I want to thank those of you who are asking questions during class. It really helps me figure out which concepts you're understanding and which ones need more clarification. If you're not clear on something or not quite understanding something well, or even if you aren't quite sure about something, then please join in and ask me. I'm certain that you will not be alone. Even if the other students think they understand something, they will always benefit from thinking about a concept a different way ask you ask and I attempt to answer your question. So, what about that test on Monday? Are you confident? If not, what about asking a few questions or asking for some clarification or direction this weekend? Now's your chance and it will be over before you know it, so use your time wisely. If you're planning on spending the weekend studying chemistry, you'll probably study too much and too inefficiently. Use the in-class activities, learning checks, and recommended textbook problems to focus your studying and reading of the textbook. Typically, when I'm teaching at Miramar, I have "office hours" on the evening before an exam at a nearby restaurant or outdoor table. If you're interested in something like that, please let me know and I'll arrange a place and time. I have a feeling that parking will be terrible at the Panera Restaurant where I usually do this, so I'll post something on my website before the end of the week if there's sufficient interest for Sunday evening office hours. Although I'm certain that you already have a very good idea of what the test will look like, I'm also planning to post on the website a list of important topics/concepts for Exam 1. Look for that online before the end of the week. Meanwhile, try to make your own list, then see if it matches mine. Finally, please check the syllabus for the calculator policy. You will not be able to use an unacceptable calculator on the exam, and sharing calculators will not be permitted. Have a great weekend. I'll be looking for your emails. David Lingner

From: David Lingner (SDCCD) It was nice to meet each of you yesterday evening. I’m sending this email so I can remind you to get the lab manual at Mira Mesa Copy before Thursday’s lab. The store closes at 5:00 pm, so don’t wait until the last minute. You can call them at (858) 578-0941 to verify the hours. To clarify again, this is not the Miramar College bookstore (where you can get our textbook for the lecture class); it is an independent copy shop that prints our lab manuals. Last semester, I drove to Mira Mesa Copy and took a few cell-phone pics along the way. If you don’t know how to get there, then check this link. http://lingnerchem.com/miramar/miramesacopy/miramesacopy.html Reminder: Two lab assignments are due on Thursday. (They were originally due yesterday along with the penny lab report, but I changed the due date due to the lack of lab manuals in the room. I expect everyone to have lab manuals before Thursday.) Put your name on each assignment and turn them in separately when you arrive on Thursday at 6:00 pm.
See you later today! Dave Lingner |
